My hiatus and the Hauns

If you subscribe to this blog you’re probably surprised to see a post since it’s been quite a while since the last one.  Even though there’s been a lot of work done on the house, I haven’t posted any updates for a variety of reasons not the least of which is that the family and I had to temporarily relocate out of the country from June of 2014.  The house has still been in process however, and I’ll be making a few updates to the blog soon.

That being said, as it so happens the below posted letter to Edgar Haun was recently found by some of his descendants who were happy to have some insight into the life of their younger grandfather.  They were kind enough to send the attached picture of Thomas and Alice Haun (Edgar’s parents),  who owned the Mee House from 1913-1944.

We’ve attributed many “modern” improvements to the Hauns through some assuptions and some secondhand knowledge – their time there seeing what was likely the first major renovation of the property.  Not the least of which were the addition of the front porch as it stands today (most likely the house had a much smaller or no front porch when originally constructed), and electric lighting.  During some recent ceiling work, I took my first good look at a couple of the light fixtures on the first floor and it seems to me that they’re quite possibly the original fixtures that were installed when the house was first electrified in the late teens or early twenties.  I’d like to imagine that the Alice pictured below got to choose the lights that are still in use at the house today almost one hundred years later, as well as some of the uncovered wallpapers which will be featured in a later post.

The Big Dig

After over 600 man hours worth of moving 3600 cubic feet of dirt the “Big Dig” is finally over!  We were hoping to find enough buried treasure to finance the rest of the renovation, unfortunately it didn’t happen.  But we now have the benefit of more accessible crawl spaces and a basement area for the new heating, cooling, and plumbing systems.

Blueprints

I probably should have posted these first as it was one of the initial things I had done.
In the spring I had Antidote Architects out of Chattanooga come and take detailed measurements of the house to do a basic rendering. Something I had done on my own in the past but since my AutoCAD student version was expired I figured I should leave it up to the professionals this time.
Obviously this is not a detailed blueprint for construction purposes but it is a starting point and I needed a basic rendering like this to start planning the heating and cooling system, as well as the new electrical layout.

The thick shaded walls are the solid brick walls and all that were in the original house. They are staying as-is, but the other stud walls for the bathrooms and closets were added later and some have already been taken down. Soon I’ll have this rendering altered to show what the floorplan will look like!

It’s time!

Time for a lot of things.  Time to start a renovation, time to start packing, and time to start a blog about the whole thing.  I haven’t done much with it yet obviously, but hopefully soon I’ll have something in the “about” section, pictures for everyone to look at as things change, and I’m sure to ask your imput at somepoint too.  So, thanks for joining and stay tuned!
